do you live with a creative genius?

Sometimes it can be a challenge. After all, we creative types can be very demanding and fickle…”Fetch me my paints! No, my watercolors! Now bring out the crayons and markers!”

I had the young art prodigy in mind when I created this new tee shirt, printed with the words creative genius.

My original illustration is on a white cotton tee. They’re available in two styles and nine sizes.

coming soon…

I have a new little series of paintings coming to Etsy (in the Tuesday update next week). Here is a sneak peek at my favorite so far. Most of them will be small (10 inches or less). I think this one in particular is a perfect little shelf sitter.

I also have a brand new etsy banner that I like much better than the previous one, so check it out!

I also just finished a cute canvas painting for the sweetest little girl! Her mommy, Amanda Westhart, had some amazing ideas for the piece, including Mr. Bunny who sits by the tree. He is Ava’s favorite friend. I even painted the flowers to match the fabrics in her room.

digital illos

will-before-after1

This week is off to a great start. I can’t believe how quickly January has flown by! Just a short note. I create these before and after composites to demonstrate my digital illustration product. I was really pleased with how my illustration of Will turned out. His dad sent me the photo from his birthday party. I was inspired to do a comic style treatment. Love his dino jammies!

Janette CanareI created this 5 x 7 piece late last year for Janette Canare and her daughter Larissa. Janette emailed me the top photo and I began the transformation process in Photoshop, “painting” over layers and layers until I reached the finished illustration in the “after” frame.

I offer these illustrations as 5 x 7s. My clients can choose to receive the digital file only and print it themselves, or order a high quality print on fine art paper from me.

just a teensy weensy bit annoyed

As many of you know, I launched my commission-based business about two years ago on flickr. I was very inspired by many photographers and painters who showed their work there. There was an immediate response, and in a few months, I began to develop a waiting list of clients interested in my paintings. It was an amazing time.

In 2008, I noticed a steady decline of general activity on flickr. Perhaps we’re all just getting busier. Blame it on whatever you wish. I think people were (and are) growing weary of flickr. I can now add myself to that group. I suppose a healthy dose of ignorance has carried me through thus far, but how long can I edit, watermark, post…only to find my original work proudly displayed on someone’s myspace profile? The client I created it for deserves better. And so do I.

I am dedicating my work back to myself in 2009. I love what I do so very much and my clients make it fulfilling and enjoyable, not flickr. So if I don’t post something there, you can always find the latest here. I can freely promote myself here and that’s no longer an option with flickr.

Please don’t take this as an insult to anyone on flickr. I treasure the community there, just not the hacks. My plan for this space from now on is to share fun things, freebies, and shop announcements (sans the promotional links). I will use it to stay in touch with the lovely friends I’ve made there. I’m quite unsure of what 2009 has in store for me and my business, but I am going to work harder than ever before. New opportunities will present themselves.

Alright, enough of that! Here are some photos from our Christmas break in Nebraska…

That’s all for now. Thank you for listening to my little vent.

merry (handmade) Christmas

I have tried to do most of my Christmas shopping on Etsy this year. I feel like handmade goodies are much more fun than gifts from the big department stores. Plus, I get to support other artists! And there are some amazing, talented people on Etsy for sure.

So here’s a head’s up on what I have going on in my shop

etsy sales

ALL original paintings & prints are on sale until Monday, December 22.

FREE SHIPPING on almost everything!

So head on over there! I promise to post some photos of my family opening the Etsy goodness I bought them this year.

Love and warm fuzzies,

erika j
