I’m back

Screen shot 2013-06-16 at 6.50.53 PM

I’m typing this as another lazy Sunday afternoon turns to evening. Seems like as good a time as any to announce my return to my site/blog.

I’m sure all artists experience creative blockages, dry spells…even artistic frustration. The last three weeks of my journey have been extremely challenging. Of course it’s difficult to come home from a busy workday and pick up a paintbrush. But unless you’re the fortunate heir to a trust fund–and I can assume that not many artists are–you work, just like I do. So I don’t use my banking career as an excuse.

I am consistently called on the productivity carpet when I visit museums and galleries. Today’s artists catalog thousands of works in their careers. Not unlike the Old Masters who literally skipped sleeping and eating to paint, sacrifice pays off in the art world now more than ever.

The Warhol quote above resurfaced this week as I was reconsidering my direction. For me, the word creative does not conjure up an image of restriction, calmness, control. Instead, I envision chaos, energy, even abandon.

With new resolve, I am committed to that brand of creativity. The one that just keeps moving while the rest of the world is merely thinking about it.

Thoughts? Please leave me a comment.

wet noses and fuzzy tails…it’s all about pets this week!

This week, I’m working on a companion painting to the one above. I painted it in 2007 for Melissa Connolly and her three pets. Since then, Melissa has added two cats and a dog to the family. When the new piece is completed, she’ll hang them side by side in her home. I really love painting for repeat clients! The coolest part of this is seeing my maiden name signature (“erika jessop”) in the corner.

All of this talk about the furry members of our families has inspired me to have a big sale on pet paintings. You can commission a canvas painting (any size below) of your pet(s) alone, or have me paint your whole family. As long as there’s a creature in there, it’s 30% off!

Sizes on sale:

  • 12 x 16 inch canvas | regularly $200 | sale price $140
  • 16 x 20 inch canvas | regularly $280 | sale price $196

pola-ME!

I recently had the pleasure of taking photos of one of my favorite families…in an absolutely incredible mountain locale. And my subject even snapped this little instant photo of me in action. I love it! Please stay tuned for photos from the session.

And a quick announcement: please visit my new photo blog for my recent adventures and portfolio work.

do you live with a creative genius?

Sometimes it can be a challenge. After all, we creative types can be very demanding and fickle…”Fetch me my paints! No, my watercolors! Now bring out the crayons and markers!”

I had the young art prodigy in mind when I created this new tee shirt, printed with the words creative genius.

My original illustration is on a white cotton tee. They’re available in two styles and nine sizes.

my canvas inventory

Brandon and I are spring cleaning this weekend. I got a new shoe organizer for my bedroom closet, so my canvas inventory had to find another corner of the apartment to dwell. I didn’t realize how many I keep on hand until I dragged them out! These are the lovely canvases from DickBlick that I use for my custom canvas commissions.

I offer six sizes on my price menu, but I also order extra sizes for custom requests and originals I create for my etsy shop

These canvases are fabulous! I have used this brand for almost two years now. The quality has always been super and if there’s a small flaw in the surface, DickBlick is always happy to swap it for a good one. They hand-build each canvas with mitered stretcher bars. The canvas is 7 oz. pre-gessoed, so I can start painting without spending extra time prepping the surface. It’s lovely.

There’s your little glimpse into my studio : ) Happy Easter, everyone!

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed!” –Isaiah 53:5

take notice! : )

My etsy shop update is going to be Monday this week (March 16). That’s because I’m leaving for a week of fun in Nebraska with my family. I will be in Kearney Saturday, March 21 signing copies of Turner McWerner & Hooch the Pooch, the children’s book I illustrated last summer.

Time for Baby (Kearney, NE) 1-4 pm

Here are a couple illustrations from the book, which will be in stores / online this fall.
